The biggest challenge yet to the Southern American Regions may have been amongst them. This challenge is the swine flu outbreak which started from Mexico and has already taken the lives of many. Swine flu, contagious in its nature is currently being controlled by the Mexican government but it will still continue to spread if other countries will do nothing. The Costa Rican government has slashed its growth forecast for 2009 to almost nil. The new forecast, which stands at 0.5 percent, is a sharp decline from the previous forecast of 2.2 percent growth.However, government spokesperson Rodrigo Arais said that any growth at this point in the economic crisis is already welcome.
